Trustee job description

Love theatre? Got a head for fundraising or good with finance? Do you want to see individual communities changed as they engage with their own stories?

Lightbox is looking for enthusiastic and skilled people to join our small Board of Trustees.

Lightbox Theatre is a professional theatre company and an independent registered charity based in St Paul’s in Bristol.

We discover stories that are untold or overlooked. We believe that theatre has a transformational power when it connects with real people’s lives and stories and central to our theatre-making is the discovery of stories through community outreach.

Having relocated to Bristol from London 18 months ago we are looking for enthusiastic and skilled people to join our small Board of Trustees to contribute to the company’s overall strategic vision, develop and strengthen links with the city’s diverse communities and bring fundraising and financial expertise to take this growing company to its next stage.

What will you be doing?

Our small but dedicated Board of Trustees oversees the strategic direction and governance of this performing arts charity. We are looking to further strengthen the sustainability of the charity, creating new revenue streams and developing existing ones, and increasing our network of supporters and community partners particularly as we begin to develop and strengthen links with the diverse communities that make up Bristol. The Board offers strategic guidance, creative ideas and support as required.

What are we looking for?

We are currently looking for one or two trustees with enthusiasm for our work and objectives, the ability to think strategically with skills and experience in one of the following areas:

  • Professional accountancy/ financial management (especially for a small charity)
  • Fundraising and development

The board meets 3-4 times a year in Bristol. The time commitment outside of these meetings varies (roughly 1-2 hours per month maximum) but can be minimal.

We welcome applicants from all backgrounds, but are particularly interested in hearing from people who live in Bristol and have an understanding of the diverse communities which make up this city.

What difference will you make?

As a small charity, much of our growth derives from our board so you will have the opportunity to make a significant impact and contribution through the skills, experience and enthusiasm that you will bring to the charity. There is huge scope for future development not least through expanding our networks, improving our sustainability and building on our previous work.

What’s in it for the volunteer?

This is a chance to apply your skills and knowledge to strategically shape and enhance a growing arts organisation at a key stage of its development. You will have the chance to be involved in and gain insights, skills and expertise from our arts and community projects while helping us realise our long-term goals, dream dreams about the future and enabling us to become more sustainable so that we can keep making an impact in local communities and use the transformational power of theatre to reduce the effects of poverty, disadvantage, isolation and exclusion.
